RESUME CENTER | Scannable Resume Guidelines

A scannable resume is designed to be read by an optical scanner. The scanner "reads" the resume and converts it to text, then saves it as a computer file.

You can create a scannable resume by following the guidelines below:

GUIDELINES:

  • Font:
Use a standard (i.e. - Helvetica, Times) font set in 12 point type. DO NOT underline or use italic fonts.

  • Format:
Optical scanners read "text," not "graphics". Be sure to keep the layout simple. Avoid too many bullets, dashes, or hyphens. Capitalize all headings and leave extra "white space" between sections. Do not use columns or boxes.

  • Key Words:
To increase the chance of your resume being electronically retrieved, use key words which describe your qualifications and abilities. Some examples are: MBA, computer, financial, manager, supervisor, etc.

  • Paper:
Use white or off-white paper of average thickness (no cardstock). Also, do not staple multi-page resumes. Instead, be sure to include your name and contact information on the top of each page. If possible, send an unfolded resume.
